Its lagoon, the second largest of French Polynesia after Rangiroa, covers 1,121 km². The atoll is 60 km long and 21 km wide, with an area of land of only 16 km². Fakarava is an atoll situated in the Tuamotu Archipelago, at 450 km away from Tahiti.
